Topiary starter kits

Beginner topiary kits in six designs, made up around frames from our New Forest workshop.

Topiary looks difficult, but with a frame it mostly comes down to patience and regular trimming. Our 'Topiary in a Box' kit is meant for people trying it for the first time. You choose the design (a goose, heart, squirrel, rabbit, puppy dog or cat), and we put the kit together around that frame. The product page lists exactly what's in the box.

Getting started

Pot up the plant, set the frame over it and fix it in place so it can't move. Water it well, then leave it to grow. As new shoots appear, tuck them inside the frame and trim off anything growing outside the wire. It takes a few growing seasons for the plant to fill the frame, and the shape gets better every year.

Looking after it

Keep the pot somewhere bright, outdoors or on a sheltered patio, and water it whenever the top of the compost feels dry. Feed in spring and summer, and trim lightly two or three times between late spring and late summer. If you get stuck, our care notes cover the basics, or you can get in touch.

A gift for a beginner

A starter kit is an easy present for someone who likes gardening but has never tried topiary, and they'll have something to show off once it's grown. For someone who's already keen, pick a frame from our DIY topiary frames and add a plant instead.
