Metal garden sculptures by Luigi Frosini
Lifelike animals, figures and objects in hand welded steel, made at our workshop in the New Forest.
Luigi is the head topiary artist at Agrumi Topiary Art, and he makes every sculpture in this collection himself. He grew up in a small farming community and calls himself a contadino, the Italian word for a peasant farmer. He's a keen gardener, forager, fisherman and amateur botanist too, so it's no surprise that most of his subjects come from the countryside: sheep, pigs, a goose, a fox, a roe deer and boxing hares, along with a few favourite dog breeds.
Luigi works by eye rather than from computer drawings. He bends and welds annealed steel wire until the proportions look right, which is why each sculpture comes out a little different from the last.
It isn't all animals. The collection also includes a ballet dancer, a mermaid, a heart, wire orbs in four sizes and a cannon in the style of the real guns once made at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. Several sculptures from the range were part of our exhibit, 'The New Forest', at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2021.
Natural rust or black lacquer
Every sculpture comes in a choice of two finishes. Left natural, the steel has a rusty brown look and will keep weathering outdoors. Black lacquer gives a darker finish and helps stop the steel oxidising.
Pairs and family groups
The animals work well in pairs or family groups. A ram with a ewe or two and a lamb makes a small flock on a lawn, and the pigs look right with a piglet at their feet. The roe deer and the horse are big pieces that need some open space around them, while the piglet, heart and orbs fit easily into a border or onto a patio.
Living topiary versions
The ram, both ewes (head down and head up), the roe deer and the Labrador also come as living topiary. Ligustrum plants are woven onto the steel frame until the whole sculpture is covered in leaves, and you then clip it into shape through the growing season.
Commissions and delivery
Luigi also takes on commissions. If you have an animal or object in mind that isn't here, get in touch and we can talk it through. Most sculptures are dispatched within a week, and the larger pieces are delivered on a pallet.
