Topiary bird frames and sculptures

Handmade frames of hens, cockerels, ducks, swans, owls and more, along with living bird sculptures that are already grown.

Birds are among the most popular shapes in topiary, partly because their rounded bodies are easy to fill with a plant. A hen or a duck makes a good first frame if you're new to topiary. Swans, eagles and flamingos take more patience, but they make a proper centrepiece once they're covered.

Frames to grow yourself

Our chicken, cockerel, duck and goose frames come in medium, large and extra large, and there are flat 2D versions of the hen and cockerel too. We also make swans, owls, a stork, a flamingo, a hummingbird and a flying eagle, and at Christmas, a partridge in a pear tree. Each frame is made from galvanised steel wire and coated mesh at our workshop in the New Forest. They come bare as standard, and you can add a mesh covering or a plant when you order.

Ready grown birds

If you don't want to wait, some of our birds are sold already covered. The Liver Bird, the seagull, the swan and the eagle are grown over our steel frames until they're fully in leaf, ready to go straight into the garden.

Growing a topiary bird

Put the frame over a young evergreen with small leaves, such as box, Ilex crenata or euonymus. Tuck new shoots back inside the wire as they grow, and trim anything that pokes out. Keep the plant watered and fed through the growing season, and over a few years it will fill the frame. Frames are made to order and usually dispatched within a week.
